“Fun and Efficient”

11 generations later and Toyota is still producing one of the most fuel efficient compact cars on the road.

Interior

We were lucky enough to test drive the Corolla ECO with the upgrade package that included power tilt steering and moonroof, which gave the Corolla a more luxurious feel compared to others in its class. We also found the attention to detail with the stylish interior, stitching along the edge of the dash and various trims something not found in other compact sedans in its class. There is more leg room for rear passengers due to the slimmed down front seats, the floor being flatter due to relocation of exhaust pipes and the fact that the wheelbase is 100mm longer than previous models. Standard on all 2014 models is air conditioning, rear seat heater ducts and steering wheel mounted audio controls. The Eco model also includes a 6.1” touchscreen linked to audio features and navigation and have 6 speakers, 2 speakers up from lower models.

Engine / Performance

The Eco model uses the new valvematic technology which uses advanced valve control to manage air intake and optimize efficiency for the 1.8L, 16 valve engine that produces 132 horsepower. More than enough power for a compact sedan. Another reason the fuel efficiency is so great in the Eco is due to the continuously variable transmission with intelligent shift which is engineered to produce low emissions while giving you the same feel of a conventional transmission.

Exterior

The Corolla is the first in its class to come standard with LED headlamps. The new Corolla has a more expressive and dynamic exterior than previous models with a tapered front and rear design; the Corolla was given more of an athletic look. Due to the new redesign Toyota decided to include the LED headlamps because they produce a natural sunlight look that aids in night time visibility. The Eco comes standard with 15” wheels, rear lip spoiler and optional fog lamps.

Safety

Toyota’s are considered some of the safest vehicles on the road and for good reason. The Corolla comes packed with 8 standard airbags, ABS with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist, ventilated front disc brakes and rear drums. Also part of Toyota’s star safety system is vehicle stability control, traction control, tire pressure monitoring and back up camera. All of which make this compact sedan a safe bet.
