"Reboot Your Driving Experience"
It’s clear at first glance what Hyundais goal was in designing the 2016 Veloster Turbo, they took the already very sporty car to another level by adding a whole lot more athletic and stylish design cues. Sharp and chiselled body lines are definitely the theme of the exterior. The wide rear quarter panels on the Veloster give it an aggressive look and stance. Continuing backwards from there we reach a sporty tail section, centralized dual exhaust tips give the car a unique look that separates it from anything it its class.
All around the Veloster in areas like the taillight section, headlight section, and lower rocker panel section we notice that Hyundai incorporates a caved in sharp design that turned out beautifully. There is no doubt that the Veloster has the most extravagant styling in its class, the big blacked out grille combined with the HID projector headlights with LED accents and fog lights give the car a mean and aggressive looking face. Standard on the Turbo model is the upgraded body kit, this includes a lower front lip, side skirts, and lower rear valence all in a brushed aluminium look. The big 18 inch alloy wheel with machine finish are the cherry on top, in this case they are at the bottom but they are extremely fitting for the design.
Once you open the door with the ease of proximity keyless entry you instantly notice the racing seats, heavily bolstered for back and bottom support. These seats are quite fitting for the Veloster considering the way it is made to handle. Hyundai also have stitched “Turbo” on the side bolster of each seat to remind you what you are sitting in. Not to forget that they were heated with automatic lumbar support. We had the two-tone black leather interior with orange accents for our tester but blue and grey are also available for the accent options. The third door made it very convenient for rear passengers to get in and out of the car without the hassle of folding the front seats up and down.
For multi media Hyundai fittest the Veloster with a 7 inch touch-screen centre display with standard features like rear view camera, bluetooth, and navigation for convenience. You are able to control everything without taking your eyes off the road but utilizing the heated steering wheel that has all your media controls, paddle shift and voice recognition mounted at your fingertips. USB and AUX are both accessible at the centre console, plug in your iPod or iPhone and search for music with your voice. Standard for the Turbo model is a 450-watt premium auto system with 8 speakers including a 8 inch subwoofer delivering crisp clear audio.
What took the the Veloster interior from good to great was the addition of the Panoramic sunroof, it spans almost the length of the roof giving all passengers great natural light and deceivingly more space.
Powered by a 1.6L Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine with twin-scroll turbocharger, the Veloster produces 201 horsepower and 195 ft-lb of torque. The aluminium block and head construction is light weight and durable. Hyundai made this engine Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT) for better emissions and greater power. You have the option of going with the standard 6-speed manual transmission or opting for the new 7-Speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) with paddle shifters.
Our tester was fitted with the automatic transmission and it preformed magically. Smooth, responsive and quick was the name of the game for this model and the Veloster proved to be nimble as can be, the sport tuned suspension and steering added a great flavour of driving experience. Hyundai offers Driver Selectable Steering Mode (DSSM) standard on lots of their cars, the Veloster was no exception. This allows you to choose from three different steering modes (Comfort, Normal, Sport) that customize control and feeling through the steering wheel.
The Veloster is a small car with lots of punch and style. Quick acceleration, great handling and excellent fuel milage are the perfect recipe for an awesome daily driver that can deliver a sense of thrill without breaking the bank. The Veloster gives you a combined fuel economy rating of 8.1L/100km (8.9L/100km City and 7.1L/100km HWY)
Being such a small car you might think safety could be a concern, however Hyundai payed careful attention to this aspect of design. Six standard airbags starting with two front airbags, two curtain airbags running from the front of the car to the back of the car, and two side airbags provide protection all around.
Although the Veloster is quite simple to park in any situation you still get Rear Parking Assist just incase there is something behind you not quite visible through your mirrors.
For driver assistance we have Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), Traction Control System (TCS) and Electronic Stabilty Control (ESC).
